There are still a few people out there with the old fashioned view that a man in a kilt must be Scottish. I have even met this attitude in England while wearing a denim kilt, but they were friendly once they heard my Scots accent.

I guess that I sometimes feel exactly that way, Ron....in some sets of circumstances a hearty two-or-three-word invective does seem appropriate. Should the offending party then act offended, I would simply state that I, at least, will just come out and BE insulting rather than dancing around it like a sissy the way that they're doing it. As I mentioned earlier, some folks seem to get a certain degree of vicious pleasure out of being "witty" and sort of trying to channel Oscar Wilde...in the end, though, they're probably meaner than someone who just comes out and cusses you out.

Thank you sir. I'll have to look you up when I come to Austin to see the bats! For those of you who don't know, Austin is home to the world's largest urban colony of Mexican Freetailed bats. When they take off at sunset from their roost under the Congress Ave. bridge, it's a sight to behold.

DSF, have you ever gone to see their evening flight kilted? You probably attracted as much attention as they did!

I'm attending a St. Andrew's Supper tonight with the Scottish Society of the Desert, of which I'm a new member, so when someone asks if I'm a Scot I can say, "Well, I'm a member of the SSOD".

    Cheers!

    And specifically, this page:

There is also a couple of Italian tartans available, if I remember correctly.

The decision to allow someone else to evoke unpleasant emotions within you is yours. As a gentleman, you deftly sidestep her foolish attempts.

Sorry, Ron, but this time I can't agree with you. Playing "tit for tat" reduces the offended to the moral level of the offender. Much better to bear in mind that snobs take themselves so very seriously that they can't tolerate any hint of ridicule. Outright laughter should be your last resort. A smile that clearly said, "I can't take you seriously," would have devastated that woman, or humiliated her, or infuriated her, and in any case left RB in indisputable possession of the high ground.
