Those are great!
When I was in college there was a few of us that made the Maynard Ferguson concerts whenever he came to town. Once, he was at a local junior college with his group and the hall they were playing in only held about 250 people. We watched the first show and then went back in for the second show. After the intro number he looked around the audience and asked, "How many of you were at the first show?" About two thirds of the audience raised their hands, so Ferguson says, "Well, then lets do something different."
He motioned for the band to take a seat, then stepped out onto the apron of the stage and proceeded to fill the hall with the most beautiful version of selections from the opera "Pagliaci" imaginable. He ended his solo set with his own take on "vesti la guipa" and brought the house down. The next year he released Pagliaci on an album.
Great times!
