Jazz sped up my clock
I get one day off a month in Iraq and I was catching up on some AAR's and medical maintenance when I found an old CD with some late 70's early 80's soft jazz...Before you know it, time had slipped by and now the day is almost over...If you like Jazz, let me suggest the following:
Al Stewart
Steely Dan
10cc
Atlanta Rythm Section
Alan Parsons Project
Lou Rawls
Boz Skaggs
Throw in a little Barbara Streisand and some Ambrosia and I was thrown back in time...It may have been over quick, but man, what a day.
Cheers
Chase

I can remember sitting on a fire base between fire missions and the daily duty done and getting lost is some good music. It is amazing what some notes and melodies can do for you.

I'm not a fan of over-produced smooth jazz. Give me the 50's bebop club jazz any day! Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Lionel Hampton, Thelonious Monk, Vince Guaraldi, Chet Baker, Bill Charlap, Benny Carter, Barry Harris...
The best jazz is usually played in a dark club by a trio. Bass, drums, and a guy with chops like you've never heard. And the best thing about live jazz is that it's never the same thing twice.

I would have to agree with you Greg, one of my favorite CD's is a recording of Charlie Parker from a little club, someone in the audience recored it without anyones knowledge and 50 yrs later it made it to a CD, the sound quality is terrible but the music is just stellar. Another fav of mine is the Charlie Parker Jam Session, just Charile and some heavy hitters jamming but it's excellent.

I can only second Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, among many of the others that Beloitpiper mentioned. And in keeping with the speed of the thread topic Art Tatum was simply amazing in how fast he could play piano. And I really like Bobby Darin's jazz take on Kurt Weill's Mackie Messer aka Mack the Knife.

One of my favorite jazz CDs is of Duke Ellington, Max Roach, and Charles Mingus playing as a trio. In the spirit of "bass, drums, and someone with serious chops," I think it qualifies. Or, in the spirit of "piano, bass, and someone with serious chops," or "piano, drums, and someone with serious chops..."
Another favorite is a collection of Charlie Parker stuff. Awe-inspiring.
Lovin' the breeze 'tween m'knees!

If you like jazz, check out the soundtracks from the anime series Cowboy Bebop. The vast majority of music for the series and movie was done by The Seatbelts, led by Yoko Kanno. I have the box set. It's funny, I can never remember whether it was the series that hooked me itself, or the music that got me. Either way, The Seatbelts are incredible. And the style ranges from club jazz sound to heavy techno jazz. (Not to mention blues and rock, among others.)
If you do decide to check it out, the disc I'd recommend you find is Tank!- it's a best of type of disc with some of the more incredible tracks on it.
