Congratulations on the sideburns! I've had the opposite experience. I've been able to grow a full beard since I was 16 (coincidentally that was the age at which I was last carded).

I'm down to just a goatee now. About 10-12 years ago while I was on vacation, I looked at my thinning head, and did a buzz cut (and later shaved it for a while). The full beard looked funny with the shaved head so I narrowed it down to the goatee.

The only reason I can skip shaving for a day without looking scruffy is that my beard is fairly light in color.

I'm jealous of you guys. I've been shaving since I was 11. I'm tired of it, but I don't want to grow a beard.

I have huge mutton chops, partially because I like the style, partially because it cuts my shaving time in half.
