DIY long hair sporran
Hello! I'm new here and have stayed up many nights this last week reading all the posts. This is a WONDERFUL forum of information and sharing.
I do a bit of sewing, and managed to make a Pipers horsehair sporran. I used a mesh backing and latch-hooked the hairs in 8-10 at a time. I used a little tiny hook that one uses for catching pulls in sweaters.
I tried to take a close up of the backing but I am not sure it shows very well. It took a about a month of sitting and working evenings. The cantle and backing came from a cheep artificial horsehair sporran I found on e-bay.
Next time I will make the backing from scratch. It is VERY poor leather and has rubbed lines in his kilt. Any suggestions other than the black electrical tape I am currently using to protect the kilt?
Oh yes, another thing. I have lost the top knob on the cantle. Any suggestions on replacements?
I have some pictures, but I do not know how to post them.

I've been considering making a sporran along those lines, but I hadn't worked out how to attach the hair. What size mesh did you use?
And as for your second question, try clanart.com. They have a fairly good selection.

WOW! What a project! Welcome to the forum from Snellville Ga!

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Clanart are good - I use them a lot (I only wish they'd make stuff in silver as well as pewter). You can also get horsehair from Weaver Leather, Mount Hope, Ohio.

pictures of horsehair sporran
I have not figured out how to link it yet but here is an AOL homepage that I created to stick the pictures on.

Oh, and my main web page is www.mythicalcreations.com.
That one is under major reconstruction, (I need help!) as it is ancient and most of the links in the catalogue do not work any more. If you want to see my stuffies, click on the "photo's of julie's creations" links. At least that still works.
