I know several hunters who hunt in Buz Kidder canvas kilts. It's not a traditional kilt, but a traditional kilt, as they are now, probably wouldn't be good for hunting. That still leaves the question, when does one wear a basic brown rabbit fur sporran. I dress fairly casually, the most formal being a plain shirt and tie.

And, if kilted, you want a good cowhide sporran that won't snag in the heather, gorse and bracken. A fur sporran, once wet, will look like some sort of drowned cat tied 'round your waist. I've hunted, stalked, and shot for nearly half a century and, aside from busting clays in a kilt at a charity shoot, I've never seen anyone seriously out in the field in a kilt other than hunt servants. Gaawd but tartan shops have a lot to answer for....
