    Tartan "Micarta" Sgian Dubh

Pretty sure this is a first of it's kind. I made some tartancarta (homemade "Micarta"), used a plain carbon steel sgian blade with a basic heat, quench, temper and polish. Put it all together and made a lightweight molded plastic sheath.

Here are the ingredients. Tartan pleat cutout scraps. Piece of 6061 T6 aluminum from a crashed airplane and a sgian blade.

First a double shot of espresso

    The tartancarta ingredients

    A little blade work

    Almost a knife

My first "Micarta" sgian. I like the way it turned out and will be making a few more someday.

My next batch of tartancarta will be alternating tartans for some contrast.

9mm maximum thickness. Is almost flush with the sheath on the leg side.

The back. 6.5" overall, 3.5" blade

The front has nice patterning that will show over the hose.

I only had 1000 grit so I'll try some finer finishes in the coming days.

I really like the tartan micarta idea ! Lots of folks doing this kind of thing (making resin bonded micarta like handle materials), but this is amongst the coolest of the ones I've seen. Good job !

I think I learn something from everyone of your posts.

    Thanks.

Great job! Is that X-Marks tartan that you used?

    Very cool, O'Neille. Thanks!

You laid the tartan lams right over the tang rather than laying them up and then drilling a tang hole, right?
And that's a poured pewter bolster and end cap?

    Wonderful job.
