Just in case any of you might be traveling with your broadsword, a word of caution. Local law in NYC forbids carrying any kind of knife over 3 inches. What kind of tizzy could the sword make?

Back in my younger days, I was into fencing, and went to many tournaments. I never had any problems traveling with swords. Of course this was pre-9/11.

James,
As a former fencer (epee') I can't imagine any officer having a problem with someone transporting fencing equipment, assuming it wasn't being used in an inappropriate manner.
As for carrying an actual sword, common sense should lead one in knowing when and where would be appropriate
Cheers

I was into foil, sabre and epee. Carrying the swords from one place to another was the "appropriate" thing that I'm referring to.

I would assume that fencing equipment carried in a case that masked what it actually is would be fine. If it can be seen as a sword I would think you might run into problems.
I have from time to time had questions from the police about my dirk (which I use for The Address). Because of that I now, at the suggestion of the police, usually carry it in a brief case. Of course if I am travelling I send it FedEx. I think they would be even unhappier about the dirk...even in a bag.
