step by step fringed tartan garter ties
Since Splash4 asked, and the instructions I wrote while trying to dash off to class were oop: Here's my attempt at good directions for making garter ties.
1. cut a strip 4" wide and in a length of 2x your leg circumfrence, plus 10-12" (depending on how long you want the ends to hang), placing the color you want in the center. I selected a blue stripe. (Trust me, it may be hard to see, but it's there.)
2. pin and sew along the length of the tube staying 3" in from the ends using a machine straight stitch, like so:
3. Turn the tube inside out ( so that the stitch you just sewed is now on the inside) and sew 3" from the end using a machine double overcast stitch:
4. tuck the double overcast stitch up inside the tube, making sure that the garter is flat, not bunched, and secure with a machine straight stitch. It should come out looking like this:
5. pull out the horizontal threads to make the fringe. I find that an old wire hairbrush (like one of these: )helps. It should look like this:
Once you've fringed both ends, you have yourself a garter tie! I hope these instructions are clear enough, I'm not used to writing instructions.

Thank you sir! Now all I have to do is find a sewing machine!!!
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Has anyone tried these? I'm looking at getting some garter ties, but if I could make some, I'd be down with that.
What would you estimate the skill level of this project to be? If someone (say...myself, lol) had no sewing machine skills at all, would this be something we could figure out?
The double overcast stitch folding part was a little confusing, but I think I figured it out. Basically, you want to hide the thick double overcast, but still have the rest of the 3 inches coming out of the bottom to create the fringe.
So would it be easy for a sewing noob to make these?

First off from Sunny Southern California
I made a pair of these by hand while watching TV one evening. Not too hard!

Thank you for the welcome. I forgot to post a welcome thread, I was so excited to see some instructions for these. lol
I don't know how much I'll be able to do by hand, but I think I could figure it out on a sewing machine.
I'll post my results in the pictures forum.

Out of curiosity, I'm wanting to do a set of these in solid green or something of that nature. What material do you all recommend me to try? What would create a nice fringe when the horizontal stitches are pulled out?
