    Wasn't Steed given away by that in an episode of The Avengers?

    He claimed to always wear the kilt, but when something was thrown into his lap he brought his knees together to catch it.

    He had already passed several tests of scottishness - by such things as putting salt rather than sugar into his porridge, but he was at last caught out...
