I don't have that kind of time ... and the Coast Starlate didn't get that name for nothing.
We once got into Hell-A at 4:30am (scheduled arrival 9pm the previous night) on New Years Day with a deserted Union Station. The commisary people were the only ones to show up to unload the dining car (they are/were responsible for all it's contents and money), the assitant conductor ferried passengers to the front of the station on a baggage cart, I locked the baggage car door from the inside*, left the Head End power on, locked the locomotives and cars and went home.
* - I rode up with a friend who was the Conductor at the time, when the crew was still based in LA, sort of the assitant to the assistant conductor - and I can throw bags and organize a bag car like nobodies bidness. I can also rehang doors using sledge hammers and pry bars
I had the shortest walk to my car, I'd parked on the platform at LA (back when you could do that and get away with it ... if you knew where.
Anyhoo, I've got an estimated $1800 USD out there already, jonesing or not.
I feel '08 is gonna be a good kilted year and I'll be dispensing more dollarage later.
CT - last radio transmission to the engineer: "Say Good night Charlie" , he replied "Good Night Charlie !"
