Just joined a couple of hours ago, but thought perhaps could contribute here.
I pipe and shiver at a lotta funerals. A few years ago. I sewed a black cloak with a dark colored lining. It's a simple 3/4 circle sewn from 3 panels and with collar.
I used a length of string & piece of chalk to lay out the panels. A coupla chromed buttons secure it.
A 3/4 circle as compared to a 1/2 circle, will rest on the shoulders w/o securing, whereas a half requires a closure tie and will dig uncomfortably into your neck. A full circle would work too.
On a cold day waiting for the preacher to finish, I wrap it around me and my pipes. It helps keep my hands warmer & dexterous. It looks good with an ordinary black Argyll jacket and formal Prince Charlie as well.
