My suggestion: BUY the Rob Roy. Rent (or beg, or borrow, or steal) a more formal one for your event. If you can borrow a jacket, surely somebody can lend a sporran.
That would be my take on the situation, As I would know of no one who ownes a PC that doesn't also own a (at least low-end) evening sporran.
E-bay also has some really low-cost evening sporrans, that hold up for at least casual inspection. ie rabbit fur and stamped metal cantle. If you have time, you should be able to score one for around $25 US. If you think that you will be in evening attire very seldom, it seems a waste to spend a lot of money on a sporran. Just not the Scottish thing to do!
