Choosing a Sporran...HELP!
Greetings all. Please be kind as this is my first posted question. I am currently putting together my first kilt kit and I have found the exact sporran I would like to purchase. It is a very nice traditional "Rob Roy". My problem is this. I have a formal event that I will be wearing my kilt to after which it will only be worn for casual wear. Therefore I don't want to be out the money for something that I will only wear once.
So my question would be is this appropriate for the event?

A few questions:
How formal is this event?
What kind of jacket will you be wearing?
What does the sporran look like (is there a picture we can see)?

I would rent it, if I could.

Is the Rob Roy black or brown?

Event is very formal though I will only be the casual observer.
I will be borrowing either an Argyl or PC jacket.
Again I know that it is not traditionally considered a formal sporran, I am just wondering if I could get away with it. It will be the only formal event for sometime were as I plan on attending a multitude of casual events and I don't have the money to purchase two.
The other one I am interested in is more formal but again could I get away with it for casual wear?
Thanks for all the help.

The Rob Roy is great for casual everyday wear but not exactly formal. The formal will look great at your event but not exactly casual everyday wear.
My suggestion: BUY the Rob Roy. Rent (or beg, or borrow, or steal) a more formal one for your event. If you can borrow a jacket, surely somebody can lend a sporran.

That would be my take on the situation, As I would know of no one who ownes a PC that doesn't also own a (at least low-end) evening sporran.
E-bay also has some really low-cost evening sporrans, that hold up for at least casual inspection. ie rabbit fur and stamped metal cantle. If you have time, you should be able to score one for around $25 US. If you think that you will be in evening attire very seldom, it seems a waste to spend a lot of money on a sporran. Just not the Scottish thing to do!

You can probably get away with wearing the Rob Roy sporran (if it is black) with an Argyll jacket. A semi-formal sporran is usually worn with an Argyll jacket, so you're not that far off. Most people won't know the difference.
However, the Rob Roy sporran won't go with a PC jacket. Nor will the formal sporran work for casual wear.

When I purchased my first kilt from Matt he told me that the pouch style sporran was very versatile, and could be dressed up or down the scale as long as it was black.
