Trews, four-in-hand-tie, six button waistcoat, and an argyll jacket are very smart. What ties the whole look together is the waistcoat as it gives the wearer a balanced look. Whatever you do, don't wear a Prince Charlie waistcoat with the four-in-hand-tie; it cuts in too low and looks visually awkward. It's fine if you are wearing a black bow tie (an easy way to make your trews go formal) as the open expanse of shirt front balances the look. Any colour waistcoat will do, although I'd advise against red as this is traditionally worn by servants.

I haven't worn trews since I was a nipper but tartan is still tartan!

A good set of trews are fine, you don't want them too baggy though.

I've worn these with a PC and it looks pretty sharp, unfortunately I don't have any pictures

Myself, I think trews and a PC look pretty nice.

I rather like the look of trews and now that I have my own tartan, I will some day get a set made it that. I like options.

I have a pair of trews and my opinion is that they look quite smart...on someone who is thin with long legs. Neither trait do I possess so when I wear them I feel a right numpty. Oddly enough they spend a great deal of time in my closet.
If you have the right build I think they can look really nice.

Trews are fine. But, the Argyll jacket is cut short for pairing with the kilt. I'd go with another jacket.

I agree. For me with thunder thighs and what my dad refers to as "Scottish calves", kilts are the way to go, but men with long, slender legs are the perfect model for trews.
And NervousJock, you look awesome!!!

Correct me please if I am wrong - but trews aren't just tartan pants.
Trews are very high wasted, like the kilt and also have no pockets....right.
I really don't know, as I've never seen anybody in real ones, only pictures, or somebody wearing golf slacks almost as trews.
