I agree with anything by Dean Koontz. And, how can anyone mention Sci Fi without mentioning Robert Heinlein and Issac Asimov. You can find many books by both at Powell's Books. Here is the link. They are great people to deal with and prices are good.

I'm fond of Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, separately or as a team. Asimov, Heinlein, Poul Anerson, and Anne McCaffrey.
If you like a little "light" reading (and yes, I am being facetious) check out Daniel Dennett in the philosophy section sometime. I really like "The minds I", which he only edited and added notes to, but it is full of short stories by many authors that challenge one's perspective.
I highly recommend Rachel Naomi Remen and all of her books. They are about heavy subjects (death, dying, spirituality, God) but very well done, and full of wonderful anecdotes and observations.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld series for hilarious and clever stories that are actually social commentary on the state of our own society.

I can also recommend Black Ajax, the story of an American Black (freed slave) bare-knuckle prizefighter in England (early 19th century). This may be considered part of the Flashman series because a significant character is Buck Flashman (Harry's father? Who can be sure?)

Another excellent series that'll keep you busy for awhile are the Aubrey/Maturin nautical novels by Patrick O'Brian....

Reading one of those right now myself. Good stuff. My personal recommendation would be Mr. Ken Follett. I've yet to find one of his books I can put down for long.
