I was actually coming back here to mention these as well. Can't go wrong with the Aubrey/Maturin books (Master and Commander was based off some of them)

Wow, I knew I would get a response on this thread. You all have named some of my favees...Tolkein (won't watch the movies...no Tom Bombadill????) Koontz, Clancy, Novik.... Beyond those, lots of great new folks to check out...thanks!!!

...doggone...I was gonna suggest ANYthing by Robert B. Parker.
Or, for something totally different...a novel of learning to understand, set in 1940's Virginia, "Wish You Well" by David Baldacci.
