I was actually coming back here to mention these as well. Can't go wrong with the Aubrey/Maturin books (Master and Commander was based off some of them)

If you like those, and want to see what that world would have been like with dragons in it, look up the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik

Wow, I knew I would get a response on this thread. You all have named some of my favees...Tolkein (won't watch the movies...no Tom Bombadill????) Koontz, Clancy, Novik.... Beyond those, lots of great new folks to check out...thanks!!!

Might I add that Martin Cruz Smith's books featuring Arkady Renko are brilliant. Definitely worth reading.

...doggone...I was gonna suggest ANYthing by Robert B. Parker.

Or, for something totally different...a novel of learning to understand, set in 1940's Virginia, "Wish You Well" by David Baldacci.
