You will be getting the usual comments from the chaps on the other side of the Atlantic about the difference between "fanny" here and "fanny" there...oops...it may have already happened!
Anyway...i've used a "butt bag" to carry my fishing stuff around...beats the hell of of one of those huge tackle boxes. The capacity of a sporran is a big topic hereabouts. Some of the Rob Roy type sporrans look like they hold a lot of stuff and the Stillwater Nightstalker fer sure holds plenty (though the nylon one seems a bit more capacious than the leather version).
It's just that a kilt without a sporran look sorta like a dress shirt buttoned all the way up with no tie...just sort of not quite right. Add to this the functionality of the sporran in its capacity as a weight to help keep the kilt in place as one sits down...gotta say that a sporran is a necessity. Just wear the butt bag around on the back while the sporran sits in the front...
Best
