The costume ones aren't "proper" and tend to look goofy. They can pass for the sassenach crowd who don't know better. Fortunately, the crofters here tend to understand doing things on the cheap if they are done properly.

If you are from Kirkcaldy then why not come to Embra and go to Victoria Street (it goes from the Grassmarket up to George IV bridge). There is a shop there that specialises in old lace and they might even have a jabot or two.
