I think (sadly) that at SCA and Renn Faire events it's a costume not a kilt for most folks, so you just have to bite the bullet and ignore it. Things are different in the "mundane" world... there I think being a kilt snob is not only okay, it's almost a sacred duty. Otherwise it's still a costume.

As one who HAS paraded down (well, actually up, but let me not quibble) 5th Avenue wearing a handsewn kilt, please accept my thanks for your contribution to this.
