    Question Turning down kilt hose...

Hi, gang! Yeah, I know...I'm a relative newbie here and to kilts. With National Tartan Day tomorrow, I'm going after work to my Pipe and Cigar Club's weekly potluck supper in my Hunting MacNicol tank!! Now, I'm wondering...is there an accepted/recommended way to turn down hose after you've got your flashes on? Seems to me that there's more than one way to accomplish this, so that the design woven into the top of the hose will show.

Will someone please give me the "whole 9 yards" on this?

    Thanks and God Bless,

    Sandy

Sandy, it really depends upon the overall length of the hose - they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

If they are long enough, and most of mine are, having put on the garters, I fold the tops down to the garter elastic and then fold the tops back up so that the top edges of the hose just cover the first folds - under which the garters lie. You therefore end up with three thicknesses of hose appearing as the turn over on each leg.

With shorter hose, I simply fold the turnover down just the once.

What we do in our band (and what all Highland dancers do) for a double fold is to pull the hose up the thigh, put the garter on, then fold the top down so that the top edge of the hose is at the top of the garter, then fold again at the top of the garter. This puts the raw/top edge of the hose on the inside of the fold next to the garter, not on the outside at the top, as I think I understand from Hamish's description.

Maybe I misunderstood Hamish, but what I think I understood him to describe would put the wrong side of the hose on the outside. All of the hose that we have are meant to be rolled at the top, so the inside of the top of the hose is actually the "right" side.

Actually, we have some guys in our band who are really tall (see the picture below of me tuning Jackson's drones....he has to be at least 6'6 - the guy next to me is 6'1!). We buy piper hose that are meant to be folded over twice, and he can do that with his. You can see them at

Thanks Barb, I know Tartantown well, they are only about 10 minutes away from me, and a regular visit. It helps that they have a great Thia restaurant beside them

Barb, beside those two, you look like a little girl.
