My name is a long story. It started when I started my work on clan badges and other clan items. "Celtic" is for my interest in things Scottish . The "Gypsy" is for my Romaine/German heritage.

My avatar is another story all together. While researching clans, I met a very knowledgeable gentleman in regards to clans, tartans and such. He was sort of bragging to another person he could find an appropriate tartan for anyone. I challenged him, as i knew my heritage is no where near Scotland. I told him my name and my heritage. With a bit of smile on his lips and a twinkle in his eye at the challenge i presented him with, he began to look thru his books and within 10 minutes, i had Clan and tartan i could call my own - Clan Farquharson.

I originally wrote this on Mike's Lamont Site:

Ever since reading Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac I have been hooked on the story. It is one of the great tales that lends itself to a lot of interpretations (much like Dicken's Christmas Carol). Cyrano is one of literature's great characters. I think most people can connect with him as he embodies both our pride in our strengths and the shame of our insecurities.

Then of course there is his panache.

Panache is a French word. Anthony Burgess noted once that when he wrote his translation of Cyrno de Bergerac that he needed to introduce the audience to the concept of Cyrano's panache. Being it is not just his hat's white plume but also a representation of his character, his flair, his soul, and style. There just wasn't a suitable english word to replace it with.

    I just love the word.

When I needed an online moniker it seemed very appropriate. I do hide a bit behind this pseudonym, or perhaps in my case it is better called a nom de plume. Panache is far more dashing and witty than Jamie. I imagine this is because he has the luxury of thinking a bit more while he is writing, while I (Jamie) am quick to respond when speaking.

My avatar, a composite of various inages of the mighty Cyrano, was made by Iolaus who kindly offered it to a newbie a couple of years ago who was having trouble figuring out avatars. I was so touched by the goodwill of this gesture, not to mention it a very cool avatar, that I have never been tempted to change it.

    Cheers

    Jamie

    My avatar

My first avatar was Peanut and I, the last cavalry mount that I rode at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. I then changed it to the closest version of a family crest for the surname Rogerson, since I am no Highlander and was not part of any Clan or Sept. My screen name is just simply my last name and the area code for Manhattan Kansas.

My name is the Irish Gaelic spelling of my surname Malcolm, which means follower of St. Columba. My avatar is the Celtic Wild Goose, a symbol of the Holy Spirit used by early Celtic Christians and now used by the Iona Community.

I got the name MrBill while working at the Park city Ski Resort in 79 - 82. I was working the bottom of First Time and the little kids would fall out of the lift and I would tell them to grab the bar. The Spanish kids would say No comprende ? So I would tell them in Spanish to grab the bar and they saw my name tag BILL and say Si Si Mester Beal - The Ski Instructors got me a name tag that said Mester Beal and it stuck. So when I started as a DJ on the Radio station it was the MrBill show. Now I have a Handyman Service, so mbhandy is never taken as a screen name and the avatar is Me going to a Christmas party last year.

My name doesn't describe on how I dress (I'm more of a t-shirt and jeans/kilt type of guy), but a play on ZZTop's "Sharpdressed Man." My brother and I actually took the lyrics of the song and changed them to make them Scottish clothing themed.
    I'd like to hear that!

    What's in a Name

Well, my screen name is a nickname given to me when I changed my job in the Army. I had just finished three years as a Drill Sergeant and changed my job from Infantry to Intelligence. My job title includes the word Agent.
My Avatar is a tatoo design I came up with after my second tour in Iraq. The three colored triangle is the symbol of my unit, the 1st Armored Division. The crest in the yellow section represents the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment. I provided intelligence support for the unit, and they pulled my butt out of more than a few scrapes. Great bunch of guys.
The bulldog in the blue section is my Company's mascot named "Tripod". We were the Bravo Bulldogs.
The symbol in the red section is the helmet, rifle, and boots which are used to remember the fallen. This represents SSG Tracy Melvin. He provided transportation and security support for my missions in Ramadi. He and I also bummed Copenhagen off each other when the other was out. Great guy. He was killed when his vehicle ran over an IED while on patrol. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I was home on R&R when he died. I didn't find out until I got back to Iraq and went looking for him.
The words around the outside are Operation Iraqi Freedom - Sniffin' Out The Bad Guys. (the Bulldogs looking for insurgents)
Basically just my way of paying respects to some great folks, and to those that gave all.

CCGA3359 is my membership number: Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary #3359. Doesn't really offer a handy nickname so people just call me y my given name - Grant. My avatar changes occasionally but is usually Canadian themed.

Avatar is a pic of a stained glass piece we commissioned at last years San Antonio Highland games. It is a combination of the Scottish Saltire and the Confederate battle flag. The Saltire for the family that came from Scotland and all the other Southern folks of Scot decent. The Confederate battle flag to honor those ancestors that fought under that flag and as acknowledgment of my history. My last name is Speight so Sp8 is shorthand and naturally I'm The Sp8.

I live and work under the US flag and honor the memory of ancestors that fought on the Union side by serving the same Army they served.
