I think there are a lot of variants.
I have a PC jacket, but I rarely wear it.
I prefer a Braemar or Argyle for my formal jackets.
I'd wear a Crail with waistcoat and tie as semi-formal at night or even as formal during the day.
For super-formal I'd go for a Montrose or something similar.
As far as dressy, a Crail, Braemar or Argyle with a polo on no tie is just as dressy to me as a shirt and waistcoat.

It seems, however, that when I am in the states it's a PC or nothing for formal attire.

As formal as I can get with what I own is a black Braemar (Barathea wool and silver buttons) w/ matching waistcoat. Add either a silver or black cravat and that will suit for about anything I attend. If I were going to a truly formal affair here I would rent a PC.

I like the look of the doublets but since I am one of those folks who generates enough heat to power a small country I'd roast in one. Unless I were invited to a formal event at Holyrood palace I'd probably wear one but not likely for anything else.
