In France formal dress codes are yet different. Some just won't take any chance and will want to stick with what is traditionaly accepted as formal (P.C., jabot, etc.), while others will want to create something new and original, BUT inspired from what they can find in Scottish shops.
I guess it's more a matter of taste than conformity.
