PHil, you is a wonder and a marvel. And Chef is pretty much dead on; I'd like to be able to dress up a pair of plain black shoes with buckes, although the Mary Janes are tempting.

    Thanks, gentlemen.

I do like Hamish's Glenfinnan shoes but at £215 ($430) even I draw the line.

Well he could always match them with these:

Or if you really want to turn heads, how about these:

This way the the patent leather will match.

In all seriousness the all black could be a reasonable choice for someone looking for a low cost "formal" shoe, especially if you require a wide size. As for the two-tone...I think a couple of members here could pull it off.

    Anyone seen Jamie?

For formal footwear, I use white bronze buckles mounted on 18th century reproduction shoes - saw something very similar on a gentleman in Scotland.

These shoes are far more preferable to me than Mary Jane's and much better in appearance than ghillie brogues with formal wear.

    Slainte yall,
    steve

I agree. I have a pair of fugawees. I won't wear the maryjanes.

Silver Shoe Buckles For The Masses

If you have a wander through any of those huge antique malls that seem to line most American highways, you will discover that you can pick up shoe buckles all day long for $10-$50 per pair. Most will date from around 1900 through about 1930 and can be easily adapted to fit modern dress shoes.

True, and they are quite often real silver.
