Not sure. I certainly wouldn't be choosing to go with a made-to-measure because I am unhappy with this one. This is a very good kilt and I think it looks great; the 36" off-the-peg may be just right. Also, I don't know how much better the 6-yard made-to-measure would be for another $80. However I have been wearing made-to-measure kilts for 40 years and it is what I am used to. As I mentioned this is by far the best off-the-peg kilt I have seen. For those who need to do formal on a budget I would definitely suggest this kilt.

How did I miss this thread? The kilt looks wonderful Chef. I have been very happy with the material that I have ordered from Marton Mills. I actually have a swatch of the 16oz IOS sitting here on my desk reminding me to save for it!!
I like the look of the lovat green hose with the purple flashes.
Wear in good health,
Sara

First outing, more information
Thank you Sara.
To update:
The kilt got it's first outing on Friday. A trip to see the Scots Guards. As we all know it's easy for a kilt to look good when it's hanging but sitting (especially in a car) can be it's downfall. This can be true for cheap ones no matter how good you are at getting in and out of the car and after 40 years I personally think I'm pretty good at it. Anyway, thanks to the weather the drive out was about 45 - 50 min and the drive back was over an hour. The kit also had to deal with the rain twice which was pelting.
As far as the rain a quick brush with the hand and a bit of a pleat shake removed almost all of the water. When I returned home I removed the kilt incase it was still damp and honestly it looked as good as I would expect any of my hand-sewn kilts to in those conditions, which is to say pretty damn good. I hung the kilt for the night and in the morning it looked like it hadn't been worn, which is exactly what I expect from a kilt.
So to further my recommendation, this is a very good kilt and it wears very well. It is comfortable and it looks good. Unlike most off-the-pegs you can buy I would actually recommend this kilt for anyone who needs a kilt for any other reason including a formal affair, but who can't afford to break the bank.

Chef did I notice you admiring FK's IoS with pockets? Are you coming over to the dark side? Trying to shake off the kilt snob moniker? Who'll be the voice of reason?
This looks to be an excellent deal on the IoS, thanks for the review.

Not to worry Grant. My admiration of Steve's FK IoS and my positive experience with the WM off-the-peg IoS is done with my 'kilt snob" hat firmly in place.

It really is. This is the first off-the-peg I would actually recommend for anything but knocking around.

Is it just me, or is that kilt pleated to neither the stripe nor the sett?

I think it's a trick of the light. I'm pretty sure it's pleated to the sett, but I will pull it out and check.

What does it matter? It's all behind us now.

When you ordered yours, did you do it by phone or using their site? I'm probably ordering one of their off the shelf IOS kilts this next week, and I want to be sure i do the shipping etc the same way that you did.
