Frugal flashes

I’ve been curious about the wrap around hose flashes for awhile, and I tried to make my own as posted ..here.., but I really didn’t like the results that much. The tape that I used wasn’t really that flexible, and the comfort was lacking.

So I again looked at the wrap around flashes that were offered at different locations, but couldn’t bring myself to pay the $35 plus dollars for what is essentially just a strip of cloth. So I tried knitting my own. My results were also unusable. While I was taught knitting as therapy while in the hospital recovering from wounds, I never got to be that good at it. My stitches were un-even, and the tension was not regular. So I kept on looking.

The other day, while wondering around in a hobby shop, I saw the below. Perfect I thought! I bought one, took it home and in less than a half hour, after spending less than $7 (for the gadget and two things of yarn) I have some knitted wrap around flashes. Here's the green ones.

Wow! Those look really cool! The machine does too. I may eventually have to see about getting one of those myself.

I can remember as a kid taking finishing nail and a wooded spool from sewing thread and making this type of knitting loom. You nailed the finishing nail ( 4 or 6) around the hole in the spool. You used either thick thread ot fine yarn to make you cord.

I seem to also remember seeing a similar model with a hand crank. I did a quick search on the internet but could not locate a crank model.

They also make larger models in rings or oval and you cold in theory knit hose on the right size model. You could knit and do cables on one of the rings, but, I am not sure you could purl to do ribbing.

Very nice! How do they look while you're wearing them? Are they comfortable and stay put?

My poor husband has muscular calves and the kilt hose and garters we have are way too tight. I'm really worried about buying any kilt hose in the future unless I know for a fact they'll fit his calves.

I have knitted some basic stuff before (scarves mainly... I can knit and purl, but haven't done any increases and decreases and haven't worked any fancy designs into actual projects yet). I need to learn how to knit better (something I'm trying to work myself up to doing) so I can make some kilt hose, but the garters are an easier fix. I want to replace the elastic and velcro bands with something not so tight and something that won't chew up the hose. But I had also seen those ties and liked the looks of them. I think they're tablet woven, but I too was wondering if I could make something with knitting. It's mainly the tasseled ends that I'm concerned about, but yours look really nice. I'm contemplating playing around and seeing if I can knit a couple, now.

I've only used these for two days, but so far so good! Several of the members use the store bought, expensive models and seem to really like them. I made three colors - red, green, tan - so I'm going to give them a good test. Matt sells the manufactured models for $25 and $35 depending on length ..here.. .
