As I believe has been noted earlier, perhaps it is simply the location the sporran is worn? It could seem like one is trying to call attention to one's crotch. I suspect that the simpler styles of sporrans would be more appealing to you or wearing them on the side (very, very traditional by the by). I met Iolaus at a Highland Games a couple of years ago and he wore his black Freelander on his hip and it really worked. I don't think a fancier style would do as well to be worn in this fashion, but the "Rob Roy" or bag style sporrans do.
By the by, northernsky, it takes a certain je nais quoi to pull off a full mask sporran in my opinion. It is very easy to get self concious and have it wear you.
