I agree. Though I don't know that I'd go with the fish-shaped tie, either.

Tying One One
Both Jock Scot and Jersey Lawyer are spot on. In my learned opinion a gentleman only needs six neckties:
1) a white bow tie; (formal attire)
2) a black bow tie; (dining out, going to the theatre, etc.)
3) a black four-in-hand tie; (funerals)
4) a wool four-in-hand tie; (in the country, shooting, etc.)
5) a club tie; (useful for identifying himself as a member to recently employed club servants, etc.)
6) a regimental tie; (always worn on Remembrance Day)
So what do you do if you don't belong to a "proper" club? A tie (striped, of course) in your university colours, the colours of your state or province, or even the livery colours of your clan chief will work just as well.
For those of you who weren't in the military (all of the US services have striped ties) patriotic, fraternal, and chivalric societies, some car clubs, etc. usually have ties that would be appropriate to wear.
Are there any rules? Yes, only one. NEVER wear a regimental/military tie if you did not serve in that regiment or branch of service.
Does it matter if the striped tie doesn't match your flashes (or whatever)? No. Not in the least. What matters is that you are wearing a tie that you like.

I loved Linda Ellerbee's comment about men and neckties, "How intelligent is it to start the day by tying a noose around your neck?"

Aye Todd,
After 27 years in corporate America (daily necktie with a vast collection), I switched courses and now only wear them tie thingies for the occasional funeral service or to trick out a fancy (for me) kilt turn out.
It was a difficult decision to purchase that Isle of Skye necktie....not just knowing that Ham, and others, say "don't do that!" but just the mere act of purchasing another necktie was difficult for me...
But, as to the original question, out here in the canyonlands where most folks have little clue about kilts and accessories I think the tartan tie to match the tartan of the kilt "works" for the viewer...
