    Warning get that swatch first!!!

    Good day all,

I'd like to preface my post with this disclaimer: I am not putting down or dissatisfied with Kiltstore.net. I am only posting this here as that is where the kilt was purchased.

    that being said...

My father who had been vieing for a kilt for several years now finally decided to order his kilt. Living in the south he decided on the 5 yard in the Anderson 16 oz. tartan woven by Locharron. The kilt came about two weeks ago and we were stunned to see the colors were not the colors we expected. It is the correct tartan but the blue is not the usual brilliant light blue that is the background, but it more of a deep royal blue. Compared to the rest of us in our Anderson tartan kilts, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

So be warned to get that tartan swatch before you order.

As I've said I have no complaints with kiltstore.net, they did what they should have and I haven't called to address this with them for that very reason. But be careful of the tartan you select. It might look like bumbee if you don't get the swatch first.

    Later,
    Chris

Which color hue did you order for him? It sounds, just from first thoughts, that you ordered him the modern and you and the rest of your clan are all wearing Ancient. If that's the case, pssh, I wouldn't think a thing of it. Clan tents at Highland Games come to mind. Check out this one of the Hendersons.

From the first three on the left: Ancient, modern, and weathered.

Most of the rest are in ancient, but the one guy towards the end, with the skunk sporran, is what I believe, to be the H of Edgar's "muted." I personally think they all look great, and like a clan in my eye.

Oh and get a load of that sporran!!! It looks like badger... that'd be my guess anyway. But WOW, that's gotta be the biggest fur sporran I've seen.

Also, if you ordered from a different mill, the tartan will look different. We had this happen with some band kilts, where the kilt maker ordered Lochcarron and the rest of the kilt was in House of Edgar. Different colors, same tartan.

We all have our kilts in Modern. For some reason none of us care for the ancient or muted.

    Here is mine:

This is the image we based the selection off of:

Believe me it is MUCH deeper and brighter that that. Loud is the term I would use. I think the difference was simply the difference in the mills. My kilt is a Hector Russel that I thought used Locharran so I assumed that Dad's kilt would be the same. Under normal circumstances we would have asked for the swatch first but he wanted it in time for the kirking o' the tartan at church. Most of the Anderson Modern that you see is close to mine.

Actually I kind of like his kilt but it just isn't what we thought of as the modern Anderson
    tartan.

    Live and learn I guess.

Do you have a picture of the kilts side by each, that we could see the difference?

Ordering a swatch looks expensive at first. I think with postage I paid nearly $35.00, but I got a $20 credit if I ordered a kilt, so for me it was worth the extra time and cost. I would agree--get a swatch.

Certainly agree with SirDaniel1975 and the need to check a swatch, however, the other issue of course is that some kilt makers favour certain mills. Agreed when ordering your kilt especially over the net problems do arise. In ordering my kilt I utilised it only for research purposes in relation to having it made. Once I made my choice it was a case of contacting the artisan involved and arranging to meet up for measurement and satisfy myself with the tartan/mill being used. Admittedly this is easier for me being in the UK and Scotland being relatively close to where I live! Slanje

I have always found Kiltstore.net to be one of the best sites for showing the different tartans and the variations that are available for each name and tartan. They seem to offer so many more options (with a photo) than so many more sites out there.
