    Search Feature

So, searched for "tartan day" The machine told me that tartan was too common a word and day was too short a word and that I needed to lengthen it.

Frustrating. Not sure why such limitations exist, I'm sure there's a good reason. But frustrating.

That's my usual experience, too Ron.

I've also had the same experience with the word 'tartan'. I was trying to find a picture of someone wearing a kilt in the XMTS tartan to show my wife, but was frustrated by the stupid searchy thingy.

You might try google.com, Ron. I've noticed that when I can't find a particular post in XMTS internally, I can go outside and have better luck. I've even found some posts that exist only in google's cached files.

    Regards,
    Rex.

Thanks Rex, that's a great idea.

Paul, emailed you some X Marks pics for your wife.

The truth of the matter is vBulletin's search feature is an absolute pig.

It is next to useless as a search tool and it uses an incredible amount of server resources. It is, without a doubt, the most bloated function in the entire vB package.

There have been repeated requests for a re-write of the search function, but the requests seem to fall on deaf ears. Those of you familiar with the latest release candidate version of the vB software will understand when I say foo-foo user profiles are apparently more important than an efficient search function.

I use the non-forum searches a lot too, Ron and Rex... Let the spiders do the walking... Guess you have to go through a few extra steps, but sometimes you also come up with extra information out on the web that is helpful when it's an external search.
A related issue is that you seem to only be able to search back for the last five-hundred posts that a member has made. That would be with the "find all posts" feature in the member profiles. I don't think there's any way around that, though. Probably not really a big deal...

Never thought of using google to search for a thread. Thanks for the tip.

    Best regards,
