Careful in labeling anyone who does not accept a loose definition of a kilt as kilt police or judgmental. Just because some might want to call a ladies petticoat a kilt does not mean I have to accept that classification. All Kilts are skirts but not all skirts are kilts. Define it as you choose but I'm under no obligation to agree.
My perception of how this garment came to be is this... women found that hiking in skirt was more practical and more comfortable. Mountain Hardware made a skirt that women would buy and that was cost effective which meant less fabric so no pleats. Women don't need the extra room anyway. Some guy saw it, tried it liked it. Mountain Hardware decided to market it as a "kilt" (little k)to draw the uni-sex crowd. But without the pleats it's not functional enough for a man.
I do wear kilts for the pleats. the Pleats are part of why a Kilt (big K) is functional for a man. Function, Comfort, Image are the top 3 reasons I wear a kilt. This garmetn does not present the image I want.
