Well after all the talk of the Gordon being on sale with Jerry at What price Glory I decided to take the plunge. Keep in mind this is my first foray into the world of "Tanks" my other kilts being the PV variety.
There are a couple of posts about these with questions that I didnt see answer to so I figured Id throw out my two cents.
First off yes they are heavy. Mine weighing in at just about 5 lbs. The wool is thick comming in at around 2mm thick or about the width of a penny. Tag states it is 100% wool. If your sensitive to itchy wool this might not be the best match.
My Kilt is made up of just over 8 yds of material (Sz 38). The length is just as stated a 23" is a 23" not a 22 1/2" or anything like that. Measured from the top of the waist band to the edge of the selvage or selvedge whichever you perfer .
The pleats are 2 3/4" deep.
The quality seems to be pretty good for a mass produced and fairly complex item to start with. The only minor gripe I would have is the same as others. The buckles not so much the buckles themselves although the do leave someting to be desired but the method of attaching them to the Kilt. They choose to use some kind of black synthetic webbing tape for this. While it is sturdy I dont know correct historically speaking (WW1-WW2 Era) it is but that is a minor point.
The leather straps should last you a while depending on use. The leather is not the greatest quality so maybe plan on replacing them sometime down the road.
Just a side note you will need to sweep it when sitting down otherwise you will feel as though your sitting on a wadded up bolt of fabric .
All that being said if you need or want a really beefy Kilt it is worth the money if you catch them on sale IMO.
Please excuse my lackluster photography skills
The gold really makes the back come alive when moving. Yes its gold as I have found out never yellow.Yellow is inferring cowardice. Never a good idea with a soldier,a Gordon, or anyone else for that matter.
Now I have some questions how did the members of the Highland Regiments deal with the heat and humidity of places like Jamica,India,Egypt and the like while wearing this? Did they just use the "Ruck up" mentality to push thru the heat and humidity with 8yds of wool around your waist? Anyone have any insight? What is the reason for the green top? Ive noticed the Black Watch, the Gordon, and the Cameron all have it. Is it used as a sort of gig line? Or does it have some sort of historical meaning behind it?
