In the store the stuff I bought didn't look all that bad but when I got it home it started looking like a table cloth...thoughts? Any tips on picking out non-tartan plaids for the great kilt?

JM, I have a large piece of tartan that I hand-pleat and belt into a great kilt. I use the MacIntyre hunting. I sense that you dont want a clan tartan for the sake of historical accuracy, but the MacIntyre hunting tartan existed just as such before it was adopted as the clan tartan. I wear mine guiltless of historical inaccuracy.

So many reenactors and "living history" types have been bitten by this attitude: "I can get away with this (non-authentic/anachronistic item) because the public is too stupid to know better," only to have some knowledgeable spectator approach them and call them out on their blunder - much to the hobbyist's embarrassment and the derision of his fellows....

There is some historical evidence that tartan was not the only material used for clothing in the Highlands. I think an earth-tone tweed or solid color should be acceptable, especially for a belted plaid.

The more I read the more interest I have for finding a kilt in my family plead.
