Depends on the faire I guess, and how much you are "in the spirit" of things. Highland weekends at TRF there are always a couple of 'wenching guilds' that will check you if you stand still long enough! And they will let everyone around know if they find anything!
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.

As previously reported elsewhere, I intercepted the only kilt check that was attempted at the Arizona Ren Fair (towards me, at least) with "Y'c'n look, lass, but ye've gotta kiss whate'er y'find!" She didn't pursue it. ;)

A couple of weeks ago I wore my SWK Weathered Lamont, and was quite comfy, not quite period, but I fit in well enough. This to the So Cal Ren Faire. I noticed about 8 others in "little" kilts, and only one knucklehead worrying about my wearing a skirt. When I called back to him, its a kilt, he simply stuck to his skirt line. Well let stupid dogs lie, or something like that.
Any way, as has been said, at least at this Ren Faire, the days for authenticity in attire have been gone for a long time. Probably have to go back to the Agoura Hills days, gosh that's been a long time ago now.

I wore my sport kilt at the last ren faire I went to. Period? No. Fun? Yes.

I thought the "kilt checks" were the only reason to GO to a RenFest. Well and the turkey drumsticks. Muahahahaha

Don't forget the Vegetable Justice; Vegetable Justice is good. Ehh, if you're the one throwing the vegetables that is...

Thanks for the word of warning... I'll need to bare that much in mind. I happen to know that the lass I'll be going is one of the "corset-wearing, sword-bearing" types... she'll either be tugging on my kilt with the rest of the "wenches", or she'll be scaring them away... I'm actually hoping for the latter.

I've cut out all of my snappy replies, as last time I used one, this strange girl took me up on the "slide your hand up..." line. True story.
...What's the problem, you say? Cold hands.
EDIT: I've been working too hard on my term paper...

Renaissance Fare Bear!!

On March 30th, of this year out at the local Arizona Renaissance festable they had a giant Ren Fare Bear, and I got a picture with him.
It was fun; no kilt checks; though. Although there was a shortage of benches and places to sit. Just before we went to visit the ren fare bear, the friend I was with wanted to sit down on the ground. I didn't want to sit on the ground in my acrylic kilt, or with my off-white hose, it was grassy.
So I carefully wrapped my kilt around my legs tightly and squatted down sitting on my heels and feet next to my friend. After a few minuts my legs started hurting a little, so I got the idea to take my hose and shoes off, then sit on my bare legs and feet.
I was struggling to take off my garters and all that while standing up, when I decided that it wasn't a good idea to bend over and try that. Luckely a bench cleared off during the struggle with my hose, and we were able to sit down on the bench. It isn't too comfortable to be the person standing next to people who are sitting on the ground when you're wearing a kilt. I wasn't too worried, but it felt a bit awkward.
In the future I will always try to take some kind of cloth or plastic to sit on when I am wearing a kilt. BTW, there's a picture in the gallery and I'm wearing a costoom pirate shirt in the picture.
