    I've never heard of it.
Diane sometimes goes to the big Quickdraw comp in Idaho city dressed in period garb with a re-enactment group.
Maybe I'll join her next time and see what this is all about.

    P.S.

I've looked at it. Haven't been to any events, but it looks fun.

    What a super photo!

I have a somewhat similar photograph of my Austrian Grandmother taken in Montana, in the USA, around 1895. I'm sure this will encourage Lady Rathdown no end as she is both into costuming and marksmanship.

Now if I can just get the CAS folks to reply...

I got some friends who are into it . . . I have considered a time or two.

and I very much enjoyed firing my brother's blackpowder six-gun. A pain to load, but was it ever cathartic to fire . . .

I have considered what sort of kilt outfit would be appropriate.

Never got into it, but it looks like a lot of fun. Those are some of my favorite 'pieces', even the modern replicas.

I'm sure there were a ton of Scots back in the day, taking part in the 'real deal' but I doubt any were kilted. Anyone have any information about old time kilted cowboys?

Actually the owner and staff here at XMTS have nothing against Cowboy Action Shooters or other sportsmen. We do have issues with threads that turn into nasty heated flame wars regarding 2nd amendment rights or otherwise become unsuitable for family viewing. That is why we have rules regarding weapon threads and pictures.

The Mod Squad are watching and discussing this thread. It certainly is off topic for a kilt forum, but perhaps people could keep it about the sport, the dress, the groups, and not get terribly hung up on the hardware to keep things pleasant while we try to decide what is right and fair.

    Cheers

SASS is kinda like a blanket organization, in order to shoot SASS events, you must join the organization, $$$$. to shoot CAS you don't have to be a member of SASS, you are dealing with local groups. they are pretty easy going. it does cost some big bucks to get started, in SASS or CAS, not counting costumes you could be looking at a one -two thousand $'s.

Thanks for explaining things I really had not looked into it too much to know the difference between the two. Considering how many gowns I want to do and the fabrics involved, I'm already in trouble budget-wise.

It would be interesting to see what someone could figure out for a kilted "character" for these types of events.

It's an interesting question, to be sure. Szaz's Scots in the North American West discusses the many Scottish influences on the American and Canadian frontiers. The Canadian band Cowboy Celtic has even recorded the only known Cowboy song in Gaelic, "Farewell to Coigach", written by one Murdo George MacLean around the turn of the century.

No doubt there were kilts in the American West, given Szaz's documentation of Burns Clubs, Caledonian Societies, etc. How common they were is another story. But, if Brian Keith can wear one as a wealthy cattleman in The Rare Breed...
