    16 ounce PV--is it real?

Once and for all...when a supplier (one of the forum's sponsors) lists a kilt made from 16 ounce poly-viscose, is it really 16 ounce? Or just wishful thinking?

What's the problem with it? Aside from the fact that it isn't 16 ounce wool, I mean?

All I can say and this comes from experience, the samples of "16ozPV" that I have from various companies are nothing but crap as compared to the stuff a great many of us use from MM.
I have some 13oz from a Canadian supplier and it is fairly nice, but nothing has come close to the standards that MM has and the standards we at CCK have for farics used , my advice don't settle for substandard fabric get something that looks good and feels good. MM makes it in 11oz the Maple Leaf tartan was done in 12oz as I wanted to have a bit more weight in it.

    The "16 oz PV ghost"...

I ONLY buy PV from MM in the UK. They ONLY make it in 11 oz fabric. They are (IMHO) hands down, the best place to buy from as there are other advantages to their material as well (low pill fibre technology, Teflon Coating, tightness of weave, etc).

ANY other PV (Canada, UK, Pakistan, China) does not have the same feel and in my opinion they are not up to the same quality.

The fibers that make up the 16 oz PV that some companies use MAY in fact be 16 oz and may in fact be PV, but the quality of the cloth is well below what most people expect. The MM 11 oz PV, while NOT WOOL is the best alternative in my opinion.

I put out a standing challenge about 3 years ago... if anyone can find me a quality 16 oz PV material SOURCE (the MILL, not the re-seller) that's in the US or UK, I will make them a Semi Trad kilt. So far, there have been none... all of the mills that make this 16 OZ PV are in China or Pakistan.

Remember the saying... no matter how good a kilt maker you are, when you start out with poor quality cloth, you end up with a poor quality kilt.

Heh, thanks. I was about to research your site or email you shortly and ask which mill you got your material from. Thanks!

    N. Bately makes a reasonably decent PV, but it's even lighter weight than the Marton Mills material. It would make a nice blouse or vest or sash, but I'd never use if for a kilt.
