Tartan: tough choice between Douglas Ancient Red and Allen 1996
Fabric: both are custom weaves, but it would be 16oz
Yardage: 9yd
Custom: pleat to sett, 3 straps
Why: Fosters/Forresters are a sept of the Douglas clan and I think the most beautiful Douglas tartan out there is the Ancient red. Allen becasue it too is beautiful, and my paternal grandfather's mother was an Allen so there is a direct family connection.

TARTAN: Rathdown (obviously, as I have several MacMillan tartan kilts)
FABRIC: Silk barathea, 16 oz
YARDAGE: As required to make up the kilt
CUSTOM: Three black straps, holly leaf tooled, reverse of strap red Moroccan leather; double box pleated (although I'd have to see one first-- it might be a bit too thick to comfortably sit on); silver buckles engraved to match my shoe buckles; kilt lined with poplin in MacMillan hunting
WHY?: I think that's pretty much self-evident!

There are so many tartans I want the only way I can get through this is by asking "if I could only get one more kilt, what would it be?"
tartan: MacLaren
weight: Strome yardage: 8 yds
customization: pleated to the sett; no belt loops; two buckles (handmade patternweld by a certain smith who frequents these forums)
why: MacLaren is the unofficial tartan of the Boy Scouts. My father was an executive for the B.S.A. for twenty years and my mother worked as a volunteer in Scouting for almost as long.

Tartan: Cameron of Erracht Ancient
Weight: 18oz
Yardage: Whatever it takes
Customization: I need to find a way to do a military box pleat. Two buckles please. No fringe. Military length. And some matching flashes.
Why: Such a beautiful tartan. The one my wife and I used for our hand-fasting ceremony.

I should have made buckles for the Tewksbury I ordered, too Harlan.
I did not realize such things were on your wish list (buckles). I'd trade you enough of them for several kilts, for that one Peter Johnsson sword you have!
(fat chance, I know)

For me, my Hunting Fraser, my only kilt, is just fine - handmade in Inverness.
If money were no object, I'd have silver fittings to my sgian dubh with a real Cairngorm crystal set into it - I only know of one place that sells them, under the counter, as it's illegal to mine for them nowadays. THe one I fancy would cost about £150/$300
I'd keep my brass chain and belt buckle as they go with the colouring of the tartan, but a solid gold kilt pin wouldn't go amiss.
Good thread!
