Harris Tweed controversies

Does this mean, the quality of material is dropping, too? . . .

I don't see a great change in quality but the weight of the Harris tweed sold in the past ten years is only about 1/3 of that sold in the 1950's. I rather doubt that a contemporary suit would last more than 60 years as the one I bought in 1952 has.

Part of the reason for this, of course, is that few people now-a-days desire such longevity in their clothing.
