    Actually, tartan isn't really about the weave. Tartan is woven as both twill and plain weave, although kilts are most always made from twill rather than plain weave.

    If he's still got contacts with people over there, I'd be willing to buy some of that cloth. How cool would it be to make a kilt out of a Masai tartan?

    Once upon a time I was at a primarily black breakfast joint, and the two (huge!) guys in line with me were downright curious about my kilt, and the tartan. The good news was, I was wearing my Leatherneck, and one of the guys was an Army vet, so I was able to convince him that he HAD a tartan, as much his as any MacGregor or Campbell.

    According to Wikipedia, anyway, they didn't start wearing woven clothes until the 1960s. If this is true, the tartans would be a recent innovation.

    They are tartan because of the repeat of the pattern in both directions, but not twill weave. I have two from a trip to Kenya in 1990.
