Grant - that's a major bummer. I will keep you in mind for possible gainful employment. Have you ever considered Law Enforcement?

Sorry, man. My company is about to file bankruptcy also. I hate the job, though.
I'm looking at EMS training. There are educational programs for veterans down here that will help. Not sure about Canada.
Anyway, EMS offers alot of different opportunities. A friend is a paramedic on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico.
    Good luck!

Being in the financial services industry for 20+ years I've seen one big downturn that led to many of my colleagues losing their jobs. Thankfully I was one of the ones who was spared.

Almost without exception they ended up in careers that were more fulfilling and/or better paying though there was a fair bit of angst and anxiety before they got there.

    Best wishes my friend.

I'm seeing this as an opportunity, as a chance to start a new and exciting career. My 10 years of volunteer work unfortunatly won't translate in gainfull employment in that field. I could however weather an apprenticeship. My son suggested apprentice kiltmaker, I had to laugh as I could not live on $4.00/hr that's why I pay schleps like Canuck and MacHummel (whom I can longer support BTW). So what I'm asking for is suggestions for some interesting, rewarding and exciting career paths.
I was told by a wise man once that:
"The important thing to do is find something that you will be happy doing. Forget about money, it can't buy happiness. If you like what you're doing, you'll be better at it and will find yourself valuable in the eyes of those who employed you".

Sorry to hear about your situation, though from experience, I can say that these kinds of things can sometimes lead you in surprising directions. One of the things I learned after getting the boot was that certain skills transcend a particular job, like the ability to communicate well, lead people, or solve problems, and they can be desirable traits on any place in any career ladder. It sounds like you heading in the right direction, whether you can see it now or not, by being open to possibilities. I would not discount your volunteer service as a source for inspiration.

    Good hunting!
    Rex.
