A friend of mine was heavily involved with the costumes used for the centre.

I was at the visitor centre on Saturday just gone. Mostly, I must say I like the new design and style. The exhibition is good, especially the hands-on stuff, which my 11 year-old thought was the best bit. The 360 degree film was well put together and just the right side of not being too graphic.

I like the way they've cleared the battlefield itself of all the overgrown bushes and the odd tree or two that messed up the view. The memorial feels a lot more central than it used to be. I'm glad that the signs ask for respectful quiet at the clan graves.

All in all, it was a good afternoon out, with the best weather I've seen in ages on the moor!

I have not seen the new Visitor Centre at Culloden yet either, but there is apparently a stone set into the new Culloden Walk at the Centre, which has been officially inscribed "Hamish - The Kilted Legend"! I cannot wait to see it.

It's nice that they remind people to be respectful, but it's a shame that they even have to. IMHO.

I'd like to go to some of the battlefields when I get to Scotland next year. I imagine it will leave me feeling much like the Civil War sites do here at home.

Make sure you plan to spend a good couple of hours at Culloden when you go. There's a lot to see, both in the new visitor centre and on the battlefield site itself.

I remember my first visit a few years back. The most striking thing was finding the marker on the Jacobite line which indicated the approximate position of the 400 Frasers who fought on the day. Legend has it that less than a hundred made it home.

It was weird to think that about 250 years previously, not long in Scottish history, my ancestors charged across the field before me to their deaths. It was that personal, family connection that made it more relevant.

I think you'll find Culloden strikingly different. It doesn't have all the stone monuments like Shiloh or Gettysburg. Nor does the terrain resemble our Southern battlefields. It's still a flat, lonely moor - in fact the Battle of Culloden took place on Drumossie Moor.

There are memorials & permanent placards describing where units were positioned. And of course the large stone memorial cairn. Trails surround the battlefield for self-guided tours. Simple incised stone markers indicate which clansmen are buried where.

But what I've always felt the sky was always more overcast at Culloden, and the wind a bit sharper. But most of all is simply how sad it feels to be there.

Plan on being there next summer. It'll be a long drive from Edinburgh, but well worth it.
