Solid, non-matching fly plaids
How do the folks here feel about solid color fly plaids worn with tartan kilts, a coordinating solid color, of course?

I think it could work especially if the tartan was what would be termed "busy". I have a SWK saffron kilt and matching plaid that look great.

I don't think I am sold on that idea.Although, three hundred years ago,or more, few tartans,or more likely some form of tweed, matched to,or with, anything ,so perhaps you could re-start a trend?

It certainly seems like a viable fashion trend. Though I understand that, for many, the use of the plaid is to invoke the wearing of a Great Kilt. So having such a big difference between it and the kilt would be problematic.

I wore my Irish National Kilt with Saffron Fly Plaid. It looked great.
As long as it in some way matches the overall color of the Kilt tartan, I don't see why not. Go for it!

With an Irish kilt like the saffron, it'd more properly be referred to as a brat, not a fly plaid, which would be worn folded, not pinned by the corner. The one I wear with my saffron kilt is green, same as my hose & caubeen.

Fly plaids tend to be part of piper's uniform. So unless you have one I would not bother to get one.

fly plaid
I saw something like this at one of the recent games. The guy was wearing a tartan kilt with a solid black fly plaid. It kind of reminded me of kids playing "Batman or Superman". Just didn't look right to me. The best way for me describe it is: "not balanced". My opinion. I've seen pipers plaid that was solid color that closely matched color with their tartans, that wasn't too bad. Anyway....to me, just doesn't sit well with me.

I think it would be very difficult to pull off well. At a minimum I think the plaid color would have to match precisely a color in the tartan to not look mis-matched. When it come to fly plaids, I like to take my lead from the MAcLeay Paintings here
