Plaids and how to wear them

What are reasons for wearing the (shoulder) plaids in different ways...?Such as the way a plaid is worn with a PC, the "Piper Plaid" that wraps around the body, or the way it is shown in fig 13a of Thompson's book...?

    TIA

Thanks Matt... I'd missed that last post. It was very helpful.

Any history behind why pipers/drummers started wearing the plaid wrapped around the chest? I wondered what the significance of it is... (if there is any)

In the 18th century, when the big belted plaid got seperated into two components - the little kilt and the (now smaller) plaid - the latter was still carried afield by the Highlander for use as a blanket at night. He carried it over the shoulder and wrapped around his body, much in the same way that Confederate soldiers in the Civil War carried their blanket rolls.
Modern pipers and drummers are merely imitating that "look" with their plaids....
