    First attempt @ Sporran

I have attempted a sporran, being strapped for cash and not wanting to "fork" out 140 bucks (you will see the pun later on), and having some spare leather and elastic at home, I took on the task of making myself a casual black leather sporran, to wear with my x kilt and good dress Cunningham Tartan Kilt.

Basically, i traced around the shape of my semi formal sporran, cut it out, drilled holes in the leather, and then yes, hand sewed the 3 pieces together,

Took a basic clan crest from the net, printed it, pushed hard whilst drawing over the lines, then used a very shape knife, cut into those lines, then pushed enamel paint into those cuts (like a tattoo i suppose) and cleaned away excess and was left with this result.
    Attached chains (not shown)

I have a question, what would look best to hold the top over the sporran shut, a wooden toggle or dome button?

Any suggestions appreciated, here is the sporran pre final clean.

nice work!!!!! very cool idea on the crest. i do some leather work as well. as for your question how dressy do you want it? a dome button would be on the slightly dressier end. the wood toggle conversely would be more informal. also have you considered slicking the edges? just a thought. . .

    again great work!!!!!!!!!!!

You have made youself a nice day sporran. Nightchild336, I would question how a snap or a toggle is going to make a leather day sporran any more or less formal however. A silver metal mounted fur sporran or full-mask animal sporran are for formal evening wear. Plain black leather is day wear only, a snap or toggle will not change that.

It's a casual sporran - my vote would be a wood buckle. Nice work.

    Bah? that would be?
Have never done leather work before, so this technical term is beyond me. Could you please explain.

I am only going to wear this on casual and informal occasions.

There's a little tool that you can use that has what I can only describe as a groove/lip on the edge, and if you rub it against the leather when slightly damp it will smooth the edges and give it somewhat of a slick look. Not sure what the tool's called, only used it once to make a canteen strap under supervision from someone who had done it before.

Looks great, but I agree that the edges need a bit of finishing. Somewhere I saw a sporran with a leather thong coming up through a slot in the flap, and then going over a button. As Highland Logan sez, leather is informal (day) wear, just do whatever looks best to you

The tool is called an "edge slicker", and it is a polished concave groove, usually around the perimeter of a round plastic or nylon disc. Though a highly polished rod will give you the same effect, with slightly more work to make it look nice. I like metal (being a metalhead), but plastic or glass or anything smooth will work. That leather looks to be chrome tanned (just guessing from the appearance) and a wax might work better for slicking the edges than water.

That's a very nice first effort. Good job !
