    Vest

So, I've got an offer to trade a custom made vest for a few knitted objects.

When it comes to vests, what do they need to look like? Is there a set pattern? I was something with a lot of buttons, with the last button resting right over my sternum, about middle of the chest.

Is that acceptable for semi-formal wear? Thanks in advance.

It all depends on the type of vest. There are waistcoats that are formal and others more casual. Some are utilitarian and winter outerwear.

Thanks Finn. I didn't think to look for an example first. I want something similar to the first link you posted.

    vest

Here's a waistcoat from Higgins. I have one and they are very nice and comfortable. They can be worn formal or semi-formal. These are the type waistcoats that can be worn without a jacket.

I'm wondering, what it the appropriate length of the vest? I did some sketches the other night, and I'd like to have the front of the vest extend down over my belt, to just above my sporran. Is that too long? The rest of the vest (I'm imagining kind of tails at the front) would circle around just below my belt.

If I get a chance I'll scan in my sketches and upload them on here. Any input?

That's fine. You don't typically wear a kilt belt with a vest. It's either or as they should both take up the same space.

Only problem with that is that two of my plaid kilts don't have any other way to stay up aside from a belt!

Something like that would be nice, Glen, but I'd really like it to come down further.
