Labeling various parts of the kilt

I have a kilt which was damaged by fire, the inner and outer aprons are pretty much gone as is some of the pleating. I've used this as an opportunity to learn more about kilt construction and have taken some of the remaining kilt apart.

Am I correct in labeling everything?

When I bought my first kilt, I had no idea so much went into making a kilt. My hat's off to the kiltmakers and I hope to learn your trade. With the craftsmanship and the cost of tartan cloth, it's easy to see why a kilt is as expensive as it is.

It looks like you got it right. The waist band is usually shorter. The steeking is usually closer to the cut area of the pleats. Not sure it the steeking is the bottom of the fell and they combined the steeking with the sewing of the pleats. Where is the hole for the belt?

Looks as if it's there, at far right. Can see where the left-hand buckle is sewn down (rectangle of black stitching on the interfacing) and to the right of that is a bit of tartan showing where they made a bound buttonhole.

Interesting shot, thanks for the work!

You can barely see it in the upper right, the short white line (part of the sett) within the liner area. It's hard to see because the sett and liner are dark.

You're welcome. I figured that since this kilt is not repairable, I might as well learn from it.

Can you measure the rise (top of the kilt to the center of the button hole)? It is usually 2" but this looks larger.

    It's exactly 2 inches.
