Tattoos
I'm really not into "ink," but I remember several years ago, there was a pipe band from Scotland at the Stone Mountain games, (Scottish Power if I remember correctly,) and all the band members had a thistle tattooed on their left calf so that the flower was just above the top of their hose. Just an idea.
Respectfully,
David

I really like great, imaginative ink...
....on someone else!
but if was ever going to get a tattoo, I would do something totally wild and different, maybe like this:

though I wouldn't pick a tarantula, personally.

Just remember you get what you pay for. Good tattoos aren't cheap, and cheap tattoos probably aren't good.
Get to know your artist. Don't be surprised if they ask for a deposit or fee to work up the art even if you don't get it tattooed. These folks are making a living. If they draw something up for you, it will take them an hour or two. Pay them reasonably for their time.
Detail does take space, as mentioned earlier. If you want detail, you've got to go big.
People DO judge you for having ink. Get used to it, and accept it. Also, use your best judgement about placement. I have all 13 or so of mine where they are covered by slacks, or kilt hose, and a polo shirt. That way if I need to get a job, I don't have to explain why I have tattoos on my hands or the like.
And you have to live with your ink the rest of your life. Take care of it when it is healing. Follow the directions your artist gives you. You will be glad you did.
Any questions, there are plenty of us around here with tattoos that have been around the block. Don't hesitate to ask for help and/or advice.

I waited until I was 40 to get the first one. Now I have three, and am scheming on more. All on my arms, and all visible in short sleeves. I have good work, I want people to be able to see it. But, people do make judgments, that is a fact. I don't figure on looking for a job at this point, since I have been self-employed for the last twenty years and intend to stay that way. It is not as big a deal as say, thirty years ago, but some folks still do judge you by the ink.
And really, the point about good work costing real money is spot on.
I haven't ever gone to a studio to get the work done, though. The tattoos that I have were all done by guys that have been professionals for many years, that became my friends first. Then we did the tattooing at my home, when they came to visit me and stay a few days. They both are interested in sword craft, one of them a fine amateur smith, the other an aspiring mounting and handle work guy. Both are proficient practitioners of Japanese sword as well.
I guess the point I am getting at is to get to know the individual first, and look at lots of their other work if you can. Talk to previous clients, and find out if they are happy.
Choose carefully, they are with you until the end.
