Don't keep us in suspense. Tell us! (Or it to keep them buttoned?)

The black buttons are in honour of Gen. Sir John Moore, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Corunna during the Peninsula Campaign:

That's interesting, but also thank you for posting that link, Todd.

I keep seeing these wonderful 'hose tops' on ebay and realise that they can only be worn with spats. I would get a pair but feel that it would be 'a bit over the top' with ordinary 'civilian' dress. Having sait that I've just bought myself an army surplus horse hair sporran (black with white tails) which I intend to wear to dinners this year. I'm a big guy and feel that the ordinary sporran looks a bit small on my large frame. I love the military look, and when I can afford it I'll get myself a proper (pipers) doublet and then I'll get some spats !

Not a big fan of spats. I wore them once when I commanded a Cenotaph honour guard when I was in the Air Force. There they were for the most formal dress guard functions/ceremonies. Unless you were in uniform, I think they would be out of place, having said that, if you like them, then I am ok with it.

I would think hose-tops could work with taller 9-10" boots, about the same height as spats.

Once upon a time I read of a man that had the "best" spats pattern ever. He was going to post instructions for making. I continued to look but they never showed or I missed it. Does this ring a bell with anyone? I need to wear spats with a uniform for work and I hate the crap that is available. If I must wear them I'd like to wear them well.

    Thanks

Don't know if Rob ever got around to tossing up the plans, though. This actually crossed my mind recently, as I got my hands on a pair of the mass-produced ones, and I just CANNOT make them fit right.

Forgive me for being naive, but is there no reputable place to purchase the "correct" spats?

I love the look and would definitely entertain the idea of purchasing a pair.
