Thanks, I'll have to do it. They are in an area of several Mauls (intentional spelling) and the traffic is just plain insane! Thus, JoAnn's is one of the last places I head for when I need any sewing supplies.

They certainly are popular these days. I was surprised by all the commercial patterns for them at the fabric store today. Usually there's a basic vest and one included with a three-piece suit, but the companies that issue men's patterns had four or five different styles. Of course, making one is cheaper even than a $25 vest from Le Target!

I picked up a black vest from target. I realized once I wore it that it needed to lose the last button- so the it didn't hang ove the belt buckle. So I did a quick sewing job. I got to wear it today when i took my mother to see Natalie MacMaster in concert with the Phoenix Symphony this afternoon. Here are the pics, tell me what you think and what might be better. I swear I am not a tailor and remain open to all opinions.

BTW, the concert was fantastic, she had people dancing in the aisles.

I very nearly bought this vest, myself, but opted for the tweed. I think you look great!

A kilt belt usually isn't worn with a vest.

Alan-
Did you buy a tweed from Target that fit you? The reason I ask is I tried on the large and it was too small. The X-large fit my waist (40 kilt) but it didn't look good according to the SO under the armpits. She said it was too baggy there, not a fitted look. Well, maybe not fitted to the dimensions of my torso ...
Was it the dark or the light tweed? Maybe that was the difference. I tried on the light one.
Hmm, what to do ... Maybe buy some tweed and a pattern??

It has only been the past 15 years or so that I have been able to buy a vest off the rack and have it fit without a lot of alteration. (There was about a 8" difference between my waist and chest.) Now that age has worked its wonders on my waistline, the commercial patterns fit.
I strongly recommend that you buy a pattern, make one of cheap fabric, Muslin is a good choice, modify it to fit, then take it apart and use the muslin for the pattern. When I was teaching costuming, I had the class make a vest fitted to their own body. It is a nice simple garment and taught them the basic sewing skills needed.

I just couldn't stop myself ...
the draw was just too much ...
Went and bought both light and dark tweed.
The upside was the price is reduced to $19.99 USD today!
If you're thinking about it, today is a good day to do it!
